FILL THE SKY #BookReview and #AuthorInterview

A JOURNEY EVERYONE WILL WANT TO TAKE WITH KATHERINE SHERBROOKE

Have you ever taken ayahuasca? Danced a chakra meditation? Stepped into the unknown to uncover your true self? Been a faithful friend despite perceived betrayal? Worked with shamans and healers foreign to your understanding?

screen-shot-2016-12-17-at-1-43-31-pmFill the Sky is a totally engaging novel that dramatically pulls you into these situations, and has you right in there, experiencing these new realities with the characters, feeling what they’re feeling, testing your own reactions.

Author Katherine Sherbrooke encourages readers to think and feel in new and refreshing ways. Her tale is one of  facts vs. intuition, mind vs. heart, action vs. being, a safe persona vs. self-discovery, Big Pharma vs. ancestral medicine and, above all, the healing power of love.

We journey to Ecuador with Ellie, who is left without hope of recovering from cancer by the medical establishment, and the two friends who accompany her for shamanic healing, which seems like her last option.

These two friends are polar opposites. The trip is planned by Joline, a life coach who looks to spiritual or ancient solutions for health and wellbeing and believes that the shamans will heal Ellie…

“I’m trying to help her find life again. Find a way back to life. Nature will support.” ~ Joline

Ellie’s other best friend, Tess, a biomedical businesswoman who is all about control and planning, has nothing but doubts about shamanic healing. She goes along just to support her friend, her only hope that the “placebo effect” may come into play.

“If Ellie believes going to Ecuador will help, maybe it will…” but “How could ‘nature’ possibly justify any of this? Ellie simply didn’t deserve to be sick.” ~ Tess

What promises to be a peaceful week in a beautiful mountain retreat turns into a dramatic,  difficult transformation for the three women as the shamans work on them all in their mysterious ways. Each woman is in the midst of personal conflicts and is in need of a return to peace that may actually be found with the shamans in the “sacred mountains.”

Can a group of medicine people, with no visible medicine, help all three women heal? What is true healing in the end? Share in their unique, magical experiences and insights as they reconnect with Pachamama, or Mother Earth, and their authentic selves.

Author Katherine Sherbrooke, answers my questions about FILL THE SKY:

What message you would like readers to take away from Fill the Sky?

Each of my three main characters in the book grapples with a complex question in her life that has arisen because of the choices she has made in the past and some level of confusion about the path she has before her. As someone approaching fifty myself, I think we too often live under the misconception that we should have everything figured out by this time in our lives. But actually I think our middle years is a poignant time to stop and ask ourselves very basic questions about the labels we have been wearing (wife, mother, business person, lover) and who we want to be in the next act. I hope women who read the book will find a bit of themselves in one or more of these characters and perhaps be a little more gentle with themselves for not having charted the perfect course, and for not having all the answers going forward. In the end, self-discovery is a wonderfully hopeful exercise. We need not be stuck in old patterns that don’t serve us well. I truly believe we all have the internal wisdom, even though it is sometimes buried very deeply, to heal old wounds and find the joy in what comes next.

What spoke to on your travels to Ecuador there that you needed to share in this novel?

I was in transition in my life at the time. Having recently left the company I had co-founded, I was struggling with whether or not I should continue down an entrepreneurial path or devote more time to writing.I was simultaneously struggling with the process of losing my mother to Alzheimer’s. The opportunity to spend a week way outside of my daily routine, including working with shamans, which was something I knew nothing about in advance, weirdly just felt like something I needed to do. What I didn’t expect was the constant presence of and reverence for Pachamama, or mother earth, that informs the work of the shamans and the culture of the people we visited. I gained an almost immediate appreciation for her very powerful and feminine gifts. It was like the opening of a lens I had never looked through before, and changed my orientation to the world around me. I wanted to share that sensation by writing a story told through the eyes of three (very different) American women who are forced to get off the treadmill of their various lives for a week and listen to nature, and by association, to themselves, to better understand the most important issues of their lives. It was a powerful experience for me, and one that I hoped would translate well into a dramatic situation for my characters.

What inspired you to move from the memoir genre of your first book to a fiction genre?

My first and longest held dream, since I was a child, has always been to write fiction. But I started with a family memoir because my parents happened to have a wonderful, turbulent love story that had long intrigued me. I was gifted a cast of characters and a great plot in that story and wanted to capture all the detail and nuance of it while I still had my father, who has an impeccable memory, as a source. That experience reignited my long-held passion for writing, and so I knew the time was write to finally tackle a work of long-form fiction.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given as a writer?

To write every day, if even for thirty or sixty minutes to keep the subconscious thread of a story intact. In attempting to approach my writing like a job, I had mistakenly been taking weekends off. It made the work much harder than it needed to be. As soon as I started writing seven days a week, the writing was easier and the result was much better.

Can you tell us more about the work of GrubStreet, the literary arts organization you work with?

GrubStreet is a creative writing organization in Boston that welcomes writers at all levels, offering classes for beginners up through master classes for experienced and published authors. It joins the rigor of craft with a wonderful community of writers who are incredibly supportive of each other’s work. In making the transition from business to writing, GrubStreet quickly became my life line. Any kind of art can feel solitary and terrifying at times. GrubStreet gave me the tools I needed to improve my craft and the confidence to even consider sharing it with the world.

Many thanks to Katherine Sherbrooke for her beautiful storytelling and insights into her writing process. Fill the Sky is available now on Amazon and is a perfect read for the New Year and an inspiration for new ways of thinking. For more information, please see http://www.kasherbrooke.com.

In the Light of the Full Cold Moon #BookReview, #AuthorInterview and #BookGiveaway

Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 3.47.53 PM.pngIn the Light of the Full Cold Moon by Susan Elizabeth Girard is a story of spiritual exploration and healing.

In this novel, Girard’s protagonist Savannah goes into meditative “vision states” or astral travels into another dimension of the rainforest where she meets and learns from a wise shaman, a Muslim, Chief Dan George, Jesus, a messianic Jew, a Buddhist, a Hindu, a Taoist, Archangels and other guides. She learns the importance of preserving nature and Mother Earth and keeping spirituality alive.

The book is full of a wide range of historical religious doctrine, philosophical musings, and an unflagging sense of joy in winding one’s way through both the Sacred Coastal Rainforest and the sacred within us all.

An important realization that is shared is that religions don’t matter; in fact, most have similar truths at their core. “Goodness comes in many forms,” says one of Savannah’s mentors in the forest.

Savannah learns she is an Intuitive Empathic Healer, which is why on her spiritual path she feels the suffering of others. In learning how to use her gifts, she provides us with this spiritual guidebook containing many amazing insights.

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR SUE GIRARD on IN THE LIGHT OF THE FULL COLD MOON:

What message do you hope readers take away from your book?

Sue: I want the readers to embrace some or all of the wisdom and teachings in the book. I want them to be able to envision Savannah’s journey into the Alternate Parallel Zone and take from it something concrete that they can utilize in their own Spiritual Growth journey.

How autobiographical is your story?

Sue: Though written in the third party narrative, which gave me the freedom and license to explore the greater Realms of all possibilities, the story is in many senses quite autobiographical. Savannah is in many ways a young me, but her journey takes her far beyond where I have ventured in my Spiritual Walk.

As an Automatic Writer, I have meditated into deep communication and conversation with Spirit beings, including the Christ, and many of these writings were incorporated into the body of the book.

In the prologue, you mention your own health struggles and how writing this book helped you heal. What insight(s) during the writing process facilitated your healing?

Sue: The process of the writing of the book was a healing aspect in and of itself. I did a lot of research and visited the forest every day for my inspiration and guidance. I practiced the modalities and teachings myself faithfully every day and over time it became apparent that they were proving to be healing for me as well.  A year after completing the novel, I am very healthy, content and more spiritually evolved than I was a year ago.

How did writing the book act as a spiritual experience for you

Sue: Along my walk of discovery of my Spiritual path, I reach to expand my knowledge in my Earth Walk… writing the book absolutely brought me to a higher level of consciousness and transformation in that Walk… which will be ongoing on this physical plane as long as I draw breath. It was such a positive process for me to take and I feel truly blessed to have been given the opportunity to create a novel out of it.

Can you explain how your protagonist Savannah enters the “vision state” where she meets masters and guides?

Sue: Through deep and very disciplined meditative practice, Savannah is able to enter the dream state that takes her on her Spiritual journey into the Parallel Zone. She literally takes the Quantum Leap into an Alternate Reality.

What did Savannah learn about the nature of divinity?

Sue: She learned about the diversities of faith practices and that there is more than one way to connect with the Cosmic Consciousness. She learned that as human beings, more often than not, we are saying the same things with different words and language. The ultimate goal through enlightenment is the same. She gained insight, compassion, truth, wisdom and knowledge.

What advice do you have for other first-time authors who have inspiration to share?

Sue: Begin… just begin to write down your thoughts by first praying and meditating on your focus and then documenting your visions. No two stories are alike. Every story is as unique and different from another. If you have a passion to write, then the Ultimate Source will work in and through you to manifest your thoughts on paper.

An Enlightening and Entertaining Guide to all Things Spiritual from #author Marla Martenson

Screen Shot 2016-08-01 at 12.57.10 PM.pngIn The Buddha Made Me Do It, Marla Martenson takes us on a fascinating, roller-coaster ride as she races toward her long-term goal of trying as many spiritual modalities as possible.

Just as enjoyable as her first two memoirs, Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker and Hearts on the Line, this book takes us deeper – within Marla’s inner quest for spiritual enlightenment.

The drama and the laughs are non-stop as she accomplishes the feat of becoming certified in Crystal Healing, Reiki, Life Force Energy Healing, and Psychic Development all while continuing as a matchmaker to superficial rich men, and the wife of a loving yet doubting partner.

I thought I had personally tried every spiritual healing modality out there, and experienced everything from channeling to astral traveling. But having now read The Buddha Made Me Do It, I feel like I don’t need to go to any more Whole Life Expos… Marla did a thorough investigation into New Age spirituality, energy healing and the occult. She does most of her exploring with her side-kick Julie, but her engaging writing makes you feel like you’re right there with them. You can’t help but root for Marla and hope that one day you’ll have a chakra healing session from her.

While there’s quite a bit of information about chakras, crystals and many forms of spiritual healing, this book is truly light and fun – a great read for anyone wanting to dip their toes into the metaphysical. The Buddha Made Me Do It can be considered a great recipe as to what to add and what to leave out in your own journey of self discovery. And the detox recipes she shares in the Appendix will help you clear the way.

INTERVIEW WITH MARLA MARTENSON

What sparked your interest in the spiritual/occult world?

Marla: I have always had an interest in the occult since I was a little girl. Halloween was always my favorite holiday, fall my favorite season, and cemeteries a magical place to hang out and read the tombstones, imagining what the lives and personalities were like of the deceased when they were among the living. There is so much to discover in the universe, so much magic. I am never bored in pondering the possibilities, and hidden secrets.

You tried many different spiritual/new age modalities – how did you know when you were on the right path?

Marla: I enjoyed trying all of them. For me the right path is being open to new things. There are so many modalities to try, the only thing slowing me down is money. It can be an expensive hobby. I want to try everything!

What made you want to become an energy healer?

Marla: I had a session with a shaman/energy healer at a wellness faire in the Hollywood Hills. I loved the session so much and mentally made a note how cool it would be to do what he did. Then about a year and a half later, I signed up for a crystal healing class at the Imagine Center in Tarzana. My teacher mentioned that we could also add other modalities to the crystal healing such as Reiki. I immediately sought out a Reiki Master to study with, and the rest is history, I was hooked.

How did you discover your higher purpose, and how would you describe it?

Marla: I feel that my higher purpose is to offer healing to people. I discovered it through experience. I have witnessed first-hand how people love receiving Reiki and getting their energy field cleared and chakras balanced. It feels wonderful to be a part of someone’s shift.

What advice can you give for others on a spiritual journey who are not supported by those around them?

Marla: Stay true to yourself. My husband gave me a pretty hard time about all of the spiritual modalities I was studying and getting into. He felt that I was spending too much money, as well as getting into some things that he considered to be “fantasyland.” It hurt my feelings, but I was not about to let his fears or opinions stop me from pursuing my interests and joy. There will always be people who will try to chase you off your path because of their own fears or beliefs, but that is not your business. Your business is to stay on your path. It’s your life, so live it.

In your work, what other realms do you contact and how do they support you?

Marla: I am in contact with my guardian angels on a regular basis. They are located in the 7th dimension. I use a Talking Board. I tell the story of how I began the communication in The Buddha Made Me Do It. It was the most exciting thing that ever happened to me, when I had my first communication with my angel, Murth.

Any advice on pitfalls others may fall into when they delve into the occult?

Marla: When contacting spirits angels and other entities, one must be aware that there are also low vibrational energies that can be attracted to you and attach. Learning how to protect and clear yourself is very important.

Is it possible for you and therefore, others, to maintain their traditional careers while also doing energy healing?

Marla: I think that energy healing is something wonderful to have on the side of a traditional job. You can use it to heal yourself, your friends, family and pets. Even if you never go full out with it as a career, it’s fantastic to have in your toolbox. I give myself Reiki every night while lying in bed.

Filled with insights and useful tips the author has acquired through decades of practicing and teaching yoga, the book touches the core of how we should treat and honor our bodies—the only vessel we have to sail through our lives on Earth.

The author did an excellent job in presenting a comprehensive set of information on balancing each chakra: first by examining the emotional components, then by providing the most desirable foods and meditation mantra pertinent to specific chakra, along with the relevant yoga postures and exercises. Interesting recipes with pictures are added bonuses.

Particularly interesting was the notion of let go of self-criticism when it comes to the issue of weight. In essence, the author stresses the importance of re-establishing the relationship with ourselves by cultivating self-love which is the basis of true healing.”

Interview on Living Hope with author Lynne Cockrum-Murphy, ED.D.

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 3.35.03 PMIn her memoir, Living Hope: Steps to Leaving Suffering Behind, Lynne Cockrum-Murphy shows that when we become more committed to our growth than we are to the pain caused by traumas in our lives, we truly open the door to healing ourselves and reaching our potential. I know of few people who suffered the traumas that she did… but her path to recovery is one we can all learn from, however much we feel we have suffered.

Lynne Cockrum-Murphy was three years old when she was rescued from a burning house by her father, who later died along with her two sisters. From that time on, she not only had to recover from her burns, but from a childhood of neglect by an alcoholic mother, then instances of abuse, rape and further horror. Living Hope follows her life from those tragedies forward to a life of peace and happiness.

Lynne shares the tools and actions in her process of moving past pain, including ThetaHealing®, which I am now anxious to explore. She speaks of karma and the Law of Cause and Effect and how she realized that every action she took could create a different, healthier future. Her book is a celebration of the fact that we can keep going, in spite of our suffering, and certainly keep growing spiritually because of it.

Today, Lynne is an intuitive consultant specializing in helping those who seek assistance with their spiritual path, in addition to facilitating physical healing, emotional growth and removing blocks to a life of joy, meaning and purpose.  She has a doctorate in Education, is a licensed substance abuse counselor, an Access Bars® instructor, and an advanced level certified ThetaHealer® and course instructor. She continues to teach for Northern Arizona University and maintains a private practice in Phoenix, Arizona.

Here, Lynne answers my questions:

Becca: What was it like to write such a personal book?

Lynne: Writing Living Hope was both easy and hard. Easy because I’d written my autobiography in 2001 as a chapter in my dissertation so I had a lot of material ready. And hard at the same time because I added in the childhood abuse I experienced plus I shared my metaphysical perspective on my life. I checked in with my sister on several topics in the book because I talk about her in it and wanted to be sure she was OK with that. In addition, I had worried about my cousins’ reactions to exposing the abuse and as family members’ inappropriate behavior comes to light.

Becca: What was your purpose in writing your book Living Hope?

Lynne: I had a sense that I lived a hellish life and in sharing my story others with depression or PTSD or trauma might be encouraged to keep trying. My purpose with Living Hope stems from knowing others are suffering too while achieving inner peace is possible.

Becca: What would you like readers to take away from the book?

Lynne: Really it is all about Hope. I’d like the readers to try some of the suggestions, to feel free and encouraged to break tradition and find what works for them. I ran into a woman recently that told me she had finished reading Living Hope and because of the book she now prayed more. She appeared really happy about it.

Becca: What are a few of the actions, steps and tools you recommended?

Lynne: Meditation, seeking, questioning, researching, trying autobiography, journaling, using resources (such as Dan Millman’s The Life You were Born to Live), checking out ThetaHealing® and Access Consciousness® and much more are included. All are effective in moving one forward.

Becca: What do you mean by “suffering has purpose?”

Lynne: Nothing in life is random. Possibly there were multiple purposes in the suffering I endured. It certainly created the virtues of compassion, inner strength and empathy in me. My life events also drove me to find solace, which I have, through meditation and connection with Source. Plus I had the benefit of clearing all the remaining heavy karma I carried.

Becca: How was suffering purposeful in your life?

Lynne: Possibly one of the most important purposes was what I considered the lack of connection with my mother. She was unavailable, busy, and unhappy. And especially after the fire when I wanted to be held and cuddled, it was difficult for her to touch me because of the burns covering the front of my body. Later the abandonment continued, for example, with leaving me (at age 10) in the park past sunset watching my 3 year old sister while our mother did laundry (went drinking). I believe that loss of nurturing led me to decide people could not give me what I need. I must look for another source for love and comfort which led to my spiritual life.

Becca: How do you think your experience can help others?

Lynne: Truly there continues to be a great deal of suffering in the world both from real events but also from what one does in one’s own mind. If reading Living Hope inspires anyone to try something new, to keep going or to break the cycle of suffering, then my experiences and my story made a difference. Making a difference in the world is rich with meaning and purpose.

Becca: What advice would you give to new authors who think they have an inspirational story to tell?

    1. To persevere. Pick it up again. Start again. Add more. Ask for help.
    2. If you believe you have a story to tell then trust yourself and know that you truly do.
    3. Read Stephen King’s On Writing for ideas on how to be a writer.
    4. Use a writing workshop, such as Tom Bird’s in Sedona, AZ, to get the book out quickly.
    5. Practice positive self talk. Challenge and replace limiting self talk.
    6. Meditate with Sanaya Roman’s 4 CD set, Becoming a Writer.
    7. Don’t share your writing with people. No critiques until finished, edited and ready for publishing. Don’t allow anyone to kill your spirit or your process with the book.
    8. Share from the heart, show what you experienced and know. Don’t tell.
    9. Allow your book to have its own voice, to exist as its own self. Then communicate with the book. Let it guide you.

The Unity Oracle: Review and Author Interview

Unity Oracle coverThe Unity Oracle: A spiritual adventure to save the world is truly an action adventure novel that takes you on a page-turning ride into spiritual awakening. The tale begins with a geologist, Jason, in the Artic Tundra, where he finds the Earth’s energy strong and alive… and his search for precious metals becomes more of a search for his soul.

In an area of high energetic magnitude, surrounded by crystal rock on Chevron Mountain, he enters a portal where he sees translucent visions of people, geometric shapes and symbols, and learns from an Inuit Elder that he is about to begin his karmic path. He will be assisted on this path by many spirit guides and helpers including a gold octahedron, an East Indian Yogi, a Hindu couple, two Madonnas, a Polynesian goddess, and a Native American Indian Chief.

Jason undergoes phenomenal mystical experiences as he travels around the world to spiritual communities such as the Findhorn Foundation and Oneness University. Along the way, he learns much, often putting himself through pain and peril, e.g., when he proves: “Most fear is not even real and the only way to understand that is to step into it.”

Step into it he does, and we grow along with Jason as his wild spiritual adventure encompasses finding 7 golden triangles in mysterious ways that reflect his personal growth and finally combine to become a golden octahedron, The Unity Oracle, that can bring love and healing to our world.

Along the way, Jason undergoes out-of-body experiences, release of entities and primordial emotions, kundalini rising, communicating with angelic beings, accurate premonitions, bilocation, the use of animal totems, visualization and the art of manifestation. Take the ride with Jason through his spiritual boot camp and you too will envision a possible future of beauty, with the Great Spirit working with the Earth and its people.

Joseph D. Drumheller is a spiritual healer and geologist, living on transecting ley lines in the evergreen state of Washington, USA. He describes himself as an international man of mystery, who when he’s not at home writing about the Adventure, is out living it. Here, he answers my questions about The Unity Oracle.

Becca: In general, how much of your book comes from your own personal experiences?

Joseph: The Unity Oracle is about 20% pure fiction. I’ve lived the rest of it. The inspiration behind the book comes from mystical experiences I’ve had in Alaska, Findhorn, Oneness University and other places in Nature. I’ve also sprinkled in a little wisdom from what I’ve learned through relationships and the internal world of healing.

Becca: Your protagonist, Jason, faces some dangerous, disorienting episodes. Is that par for the course in spiritual awakening?

Joseph: I’m not sure. I don’t know what other people go through. Everyone’s spiritual awakening is a customized gift from the Divine. No two are alike, so it’s best not to compare. The disorienting and dangerous awakenings Jason experiences are a reflection of my own. I’m an Aries. We tend to hit head first.

Becca: What message do you hope readers take away from your book?

Joseph: My first aspiration was to paint a positive vision of the future. We’re in rapidly changing times with uncertainty looming on the horizon. We’re also in an unparalleled time of spiritual awakening. I wanted to combine global spiritual growth with a somewhat realistic outcome. It’s really an adventure about hope.

Becca: On Jason’s adventure, what main spiritual truths are conveyed?

Joseph:

  1. Suffering. Suffering is a result of suppressed pain that gets locked into the subconscious mind. When that happens, pain repeats.
  2. Healing. Suppressed emotion can be healed in meditation. When that’s done, repeating patterns of pain stop.
  3. Relationships. Close connections with people act as mirrors designed to accelerate personal growth. Marriage is the best example.
  4. AwakeningWhen suppressed emotion is healed, it opens the doors to spiritual awakenings. That’s when someone evolves from the understanding of a higher power to the experience of it.
  5. Union. When two people are independently awakened, they can form a bond of spiritual union, which goes beyond the physical and emotional aspects of most ‘normal’ relationships.
  6. Power. When someone is spiritually awakened, they can begin to align their will with the Divine. That creates the dynamics of flow, synchronicity and developing skills that transcend the physical world.
  7. Synergy. Synergy is the exponential multiplier effect applied to spirituality (i.e., the tipping point). Through collective consciousness and intent, we can change the world.

Becca: What is your vision of the Divine?

Joseph: Unfortunately, I’m not a visionary seer or a psychic. That means I don’t see God. I’m a feeler. My connection to a higher power is through a developed level of sensitivity. To me, it feels like electricity running through my body.

Becca: How would you suggest someone approach their desire for spiritual awakening?

Joseph: Aggressively and with their whole heart.  Go for it.

Becca: Do you have a continuing spiritual practice?

Joseph: I meditate daily, but my personal experience of Divine energy is greatly amplified when I work with other people in my healing sessions. It’s a type of synergy.

Becca: How does your non-fiction book, The Subconscious, The Divine and Me, relate to The Unity Oracle?

Joseph: They are more or less the same story. The Unity Oracle is an epic adventure of storytelling. The Subconscious, the Divine and Me is a how-to introduction to spirituality with lots of examples and case studies. Both cover similar aspects on the evolution of spiritual truths.

Joseph Drumheller’s books, The Unity Oracle and The Subconscious, the Divine and Me, are available on Amazon.
